Occasional leave is a short, paid leave granted for important life events. It is regulated by law and does not reduce the annual leave pool.

When it applies

Most often it concerns family events such as:

  • marriage,
  • childbirth,
  • death of a close relative.

The exact list and length are set by regulation.

How many days are granted

Depending on the event, 1 or 2 days are granted. In practice, check internal procedures or HR guidance.

Is it paid

Yes. Occasional leave is paid and does not reduce annual leave.

Required documents

Typically:

  • an application,
  • a document confirming the event (e.g., birth or death certificate).

Practical scenarios

  • Childbirth: application + birth certificate → usually 2 days.
  • Death of a parent: application + death certificate → usually 2 days.

Checklist — documents and steps

  1. Check how many days apply to the event.
  2. Submit an application with proposed dates.
  3. Attach the confirming document.
  4. Agree the dates with HR/manager.
  5. Keep a copy of the application and confirmation.

Relation to annual leave

Occasional leave is separate from annual leave and does not lower the 20/26‑day entitlement.

When to apply

Submit the application close to the event. The employer may ask for justification, so attach the confirming document.

Can the employer refuse

As a rule, occasional leave is due if the event occurred and is documented. Disputes usually concern timing or documentation, so keep confirmations.

Short timeline

  • event day: obtain the confirming document,
  • next days: submit the application with dates,
  • after approval: take 1–2 paid days off.

Example

An employee applies for leave due to childbirth and submits the certificate. The employer grants the appropriate paid days.

Calculate in practice

Use the leave calculator for annual leave and cash equivalent.

Common mistakes

  • confusing occasional and annual leave,
  • missing supporting documents,
  • submitting an application too late without justification.
