For part‑time employment, annual leave is calculated proportionally to working time. The key is correct rounding and proper seniority calculation.

How to calculate the entitlement

First determine the annual limit (20 or 26 days), then apply the part‑time ratio. Examples:

  • 1/2 time → 10 or 13 days,
  • 1/4 time → 5 or 7 days,
  • 3/4 time → 15 or 20 days.

Rounding partial days

Partial days are rounded up to a full day. This prevents under‑allocation.

Changing working time during the year

If the working time changes during the year, calculate leave separately for each period and then sum. This is a frequent source of mistakes.

Proportional leave + part‑time

If employment starts mid‑year or you change employers, you apply both the time proportion and the part‑time ratio. See proportional leave.

Leave on demand

Leave on demand is part of annual leave, so it is also calculated proportionally for part‑time employment.

Leave in days and hours

In practice leave is often tracked in days, but some work‑time systems use hour‑based accounting. Check how your employer settles leave.

Practical scenarios

  • Permanent 1/2 time all year: 26 × 1/2 = 13 days (rounded).
  • Change in July: calculate Jan–Jun for 1/2 time and Jul–Dec for full‑time, then add the results.

Checklist — step by step

  1. Determine the base entitlement of 20/26 days.
  2. Apply the part‑time ratio.
  3. Split the year if working time changes.
  4. Sum the results and round up.
  5. Confirm whether leave is tracked in days or hours.

Example

An employee with 26 days at 3/4 time has 19.5 days, rounded up to 20 days.

Short timeline

  • Jan–Jun: 1/2 time → accrue half of the entitlement for 6 months,
  • Jul–Dec: full‑time → accrue the full entitlement for 6 months,
  • year‑end: add and round up.

When working time changes mid‑year

If you switch from half‑time to full‑time (or the reverse), calculate leave separately for each period and then add the results.

Calculate in practice

Use the leave calculator for a quick estimate.

Common mistakes

  • rounding down,
  • ignoring a mid‑year change of working time,
  • skipping proportional rules after a job change,
  • using 20/26 days without recalculation.
